The Church of Dyfrydd is a group divided in the region of Strefyr between the three 'houses' of faith, the Monastery and the Old Chapel based in Abervaughn, and the Stone Lantern Monastery.

The Monastery

Location

On the far side of the river from Abervaughn , on top of a hill in the middle of rolling hills, overlooking a picturesque valley leading down to the river.

The Old Chapel

Location

In the eastern part of the oldest part of town on the edge of the apple orchards. It was founded by Cynan ap Rhys.

History

Cynan ap Rhys: A Spiritual Leader

Cynan found his way to Abervaughn in the first years of it's settling. He grew up in a humble village in the heart of the kingdom. Cynan's early life was marked by tragedy and loss, including the death of his parents at a young age. As he grew older, Cynan began to sense a calling, urging him to spread the teachings of the Church of Dyfrydd throughout the land. The Founding of the Old Chapel

Cynan's vision became reality when he was blessed with a divine dream, in which he saw a magnificent chapel rising from the earth, shining like a beacon of hope. He felt an overwhelming sense of purpose and conviction, knowing that this was his life's work. With the support of his community, Cynan set out to build the Old Chapel, using local craftsmen and the abundance of felled timber to create a structure that would last for generations. The chapel quickly became a hub for spiritual growth, providing service to the locals and growing people of Abervaughn.

Cynan ap Rhys spent the remainder of his life tending to the needs of his followers, guiding them in their faith, and leading by example. He was known for his compassion, humility, and generosity, earning him the respect and admiration of his community. As Cynan grew older, he passed on his responsibilities to his son, Rhys ap Cynan, who continued to lead the Old Chapel with wisdom and dedication. Rhys expanded the chapel's school, establishing a renowned institution for training monks, clerics, and laypeople alike in the ways of scripture, theology, and liturgy.
